SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the accused were members of the Kala Mann group, which was facing more than two dozen cases at various police stations.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused, identified as Gurmeet Singh alias Kala, Ramandeep Singh alias Ramni, Gurinderpal Singh, Bhagwan Das alias Bhalwan and Karamjeet Singh, confessed that they were planning to loot a petrol pump in Balain village on the Sangrur-Chinttawala road.

The police have seized two .12-bore guns, two .32-bore revolvers, a .315-pistol and 21 live cartridges from them.

The SSP said the arrested gang members were wanted in connection with many criminal cases registered at various police stations and used to provide prior information to Kala and his accomplices about the place where they planned to strike.

The police were also involved in a fierce shootout with the gang on April 14. Two .12-bore double-barrel pistol, a .315-bore pistol, a 7.65-bore pistol and 20 live cartridges were seized after the encounter.
