A Science Express exhibiting the biodiversity of the country reached the Jalandhar railway station (platform 1-A) on Wednesday. More than 1,000 students from eight government schools visited the train on Wednesday.
The train celebrates the current decade, declared as the United Nations Decade of Biodiversity and United Nations Decade for Deserts and Fights against Desertification, by exhibiting the rich bio-diversity from around the world and the country.
The train is an initiative of the department of science and technology and ministry of environment and forests. Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre has designed the train.
The train, comprising 11 coaches, and provides information on the biodiversity of India, trans-Himalayas and Himalaya, gangetic plains, north-east region, the Western Ghats, Indian deserts and semi-arid zones, the Deccan Peninsula, coasts and islands, climate change, water and biodiversity, climate change, energy conservation.
The major attraction for the students is the Science Lab, Joy of Science, for the class 6-10. Students are encouraged to perform experiments in the lab.
Nakul, a student of class 6 from Government Middle School Saipur, said that the visuals were very helpful to make him understand science a lot better. “I got to know about global warming and about animals that are getting extinct.”

{{/usCountry}}Harjeet, a student of class 9, Fenton Ganj Senior Secondary School, said, “I learned about varieties of butterflies and rice.” Her friend Sheetal said that she was amazed at the diversity in wildlife found in our country.
The train would halt for another three days till April 20.
