Aiming at bringing out hidden talent among the students of Class 9 and 10 of government schools, a science mela (fair) was organised for the first time at Sukhdev Thapar Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Bharat Nagar on Tuesday.
As many as 328 students of the government schools reached the venue for participation. Around 1,000 models on science and mathematics were displayed by the students in the classrooms and corridors during the event.
District science supervisor (DSS) Varinder Kaur said, "We have received a good response as the number of participants was more than our expectation. The students of Jagraon, Samrala, Raikot and Macchiwara had come for participation. We will announce the winners, who have prepared best models, on Wednesday."
Bunty, a student of Class 10, Government High School, Kot Mangal Singh, prepared a creative model on the use of mathematics in daily life. He used Christmas tree and umbrella on which he has tagged pages, through which he explained the use of mathematics in daily life. "Mathematics is used everywhere, be it time management, banking or shopping,"he said. He prepared the model in three days.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Arshdeep Singh, Class 10 student of Government High School, Pabbian (Jagraon), said, "I have prepared a model on how to make use of water. My teacher motivated me to make the model and I prepared this in two days. I have never prepared a model in the past but after coming here today, I felt motivated by meeting a lot of students from other schools of the district."

Mathematics is used in dancing steps, travelling by car as the steering and tyres are circle-shaped, etc."
