Punjab director general of police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini has said that the Punjab Police would soon conduct another review of the security provided to various persons.
Addressing mediapersons here on Thursday, Saini said, "Various individuals were given security cover in the past and it remained with them even when the threat perception subsided. Keeping that in mind, a security review was done a few months back, during which about 4,000 cops were withdrawn from the security cover of various individuals. This helped us a lot as this force was utilised in routine policing and other aspects of policing such as crowd control. Now the Punjab Police will start another round of security review, and security cover of the individuals who face no threat will be withdrawn."
The DGP, who will be inaugurating the 1st All-India Conference of Commissioners of Police on Friday, said, "This conference, in which police officers of various states and police commissioners of various cities will be participating, is very important. It will be a learning experience for Punjab, which had introduced the commissionerate system only recently. The system is still new to us and there will be a lot to learn at the conference."
He said the participants, after analysing the existing structures, would propose an ideal structure for commissionerates in the country.
The Punjab Police chief said advanced training was being given to the cops to deal with various situations. He also spoke about the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) wing formed by the state police.
When asked if there was a plan to introduce the commissionerate system in more cities of Punjab, the DGP said, "Home minister Sukhbir Singh Badal is the right person to answer this."

'No question of revival of militancy'
DGP Sumedh Singh Saini said that Punjab had faced a difficult time in the past due to militancy and there was no question of revival of militancy in the state. "The Punjab Police are well equipped to deal with any situation," he said.
When a correspondent asked Saini if he was facing any threat from militants, the DGP preferred to evade the query. But when the correspondent kept on insisting, Saini retorted, "This is not a quiz competition that I have to say yes or no."
