The director general school education (DGSE) has cracked the whip by terminating the services of nine teachers of government schools in Doaba region, including four from Jalandhar district, for remaining absent from duty for a long period.
In all, as many as 12 teachers have been dismissed across Punjab. Besides four teachers from Jalandhar district, three terminated teachers belong to Kapurthala and Barnala each and two from Nawanshahr.
The dismissed teachers include Taranpreet Kaur, social science teacher in Government Girls High School, Nagar, Jalandhar, (absent since July 19, 2008); Navjot Pasricha, social science teacher in Government Senior Secondary School, Sammipur, Jalandhar (absent since October 11, 2009); Manjit Kaur, social science teacher in Government Senior Secondary School Nurmahal (absent since October 24, 2007) and Babita Rani, Hindi mistress of Government High School, Kala Bahiya (Absent since November 26, 2007).
Among other absentee teachers are Ramandeep Kaur (social science teacher) in Government High School, Aujla, Kapurthala (absent since February 2, 2005); Renu Bala, English lecturer at Government Senior Secondary School, Balehar Khanpur, Kapurthala, (absent since January 19, 2013); Kiranjeet Bawa, Punjabi mistress in Government Senior Secondary School Saidowal, Kapurthala (absent since Mrach 6, 2009), Praveen Handa, history lecturer, Government Senior Secondary School Hyala, Nawanshahr (absent since February 12, 2013) and Kashmir Singh maths teachers in Government Senior Secondary School, Nawanshahr (absent since March 7, 2006).
The dismissed teachers also include Savita, science teacher in Government Middle School, Rajgarh, Barnala, Birbal Singh vocational master in Government Senior Secondary School, Dhikrimal, Barnala and Baljit Kaur, social science teacher from Government Senior Secondary School Toorkot, Barnala.
Observing that the long absence of teachers is affecting the atmosphere of schools apart from spoiling the studies of students, the DGSE dismissed the teachers who had abandoned their posts by taking long unauthorised leave.

Earlier, through a public notification, the teachers were issued show cause notices to send clarifications regarding their long absence from duty. In cases where the teachers failed to send their replies to the DGSE within the given time period or their replies were found to be non-satisfactory, the DGSE passed orders for their dismissal.
