Seven of family among eight killed in mishap

Eight persons — including seven of a family and the driver of the Innova car they were travelling in — were killed when their vehicle collided head-on with a canter coming from the opposite direction on the Delhi-Ludhiana national highway early on Monday morning.

Eight persons — including seven of a family and the driver of the Innova car they were travelling in — were killed when their vehicle collided head-on with a canter coming from the opposite direction on the Delhi-Ludhiana national highway early on Monday morning.

The victims have been identified as Nand Lal, alias, Patwari (55), of Malerkotla, his wife Krishana Rani, his sister Kanta Rani and her husband Amarchand, his another sister Manju Rani and her husband Prem Kinger, Nand Lal’s nephew Soni and driver Kashmeer Singh of Khanpur village.

As per police, the accident took place around 6am when Nand Lal and his family were on way to Delhi to participate in a funeral of a relative.

The driver of the canter lost his balance over the vehicle that crashed into the Innova near Moraan village on the National Highway 71, said police, adding, the collision was so powerful that the canter dragged the car up to 15 feet.

Chhajli police station in charge Balwant Singh told Hindustan Times that seven people died on the spot, while Nand Lal succumbed to his injuries on way to a hospital.

He said four bodies had been sent for post-mortem at the Sangrur civil hospital, while the other four at the Sunam civil hospital.

He said the driver of the canter managed to flee the scene, but was booked under section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
