Indian Medical Association (IMA), Punjab chapter, on Saturday welcomed the recent move initiated by union minister for women and child development Maneka Gandhi on changing the mindset of the society and dumping the overenthusiastic booking of doctors under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act.
Dr Sudhir Raj, president of state chapter of IMA, on Saturday said: “The decision of IMA was justified. The association has maintained that good doctors have been made scapegoats in the target oriented witch-hunting punitive approach under the PNDT Act for petty mistakes. The society needs to change its mindset and ensure safety of girls.”
Dr Raj said: “Recently Maneka had observed that in its quest for curbing foeticide, enactment and implementation of stern laws had served little purpose in the last 20 years. She had said that the government’s Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) scheme would be based on strong system of incentives for those having daughters.
Dr Arpana Raj, chairperson, women cell of IMA, said the government shoul take steps towards curbing counter sale of MTP pills, unauthorised practice by quacks and midwives.
Dr Amandeep Aggarwal, state joint secretary of IMA, said the need of the hour was to bring a change in the PNDT Act by making it compulsory for all pregnant women to undergo a scan at government hospitals for sex determination of foetus, so that possibility of foeticide and infanticide was minimised.
