Angry villagers detained Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) member Sher Singh Mandwala after he allegedly used foul language with them while campaigning with Kotkapura MLA and Akali candidate Mantaar Singh Brar at Chandbaja village, 11 km from Faridkot, on Thursday.
The former Mandwala village sarpanch was allowed to leave only after police intervened and he apologised to the villagers.
Villagers said after Brar addressed a gathering, members of a youth club questioned him about a ₹2-lakh grant promised to them for promoting sports. Mandwala reportedly intervened and claimed the grant had been released to one Lakhwinder Singh of the village, who denied it. Brar, however, admitted he could not release the grant as he was no more a chief parliamentary secretary (CPS), said villagers.
When the villagers cornered Mandwala on lying about the grant, he allegedly got angry and used foul language with them. Brar, meanwhile, slipped away from the spot, leaving behind Mandwala.
Demanding an apology from the SGPC member, the angry villagers allegedly detained him at the venue. It was only after cops reached there and Mandwala apologised that he was allowed to leave. Some villagers reportedly also pelted stones while Mandwala was leaving the village with police escort.
Later, accusing his “rivals” of orchestrating the “political drama”, Mandwala denied having used any derogatory word. MLA Brar, meanwhile, said the issue was between Mandwala and a few villagers, adding that he had told the truth about the grant to the villagers, and they had no grievance with him.
