The Chandigarh police on Wednesday arrested a Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) employee for allegedly raping a 21-year-old college student in Chandigarh.
Accused Gurdeep Singh, 40, is from Attari in Amritsar and a member of the SGPC’s dharam parchar committee. Police had booked him on Tuesday on the victim’s complaint that he raped her at Shri Guru Granth Sahib Bhawan in Sector 28, where he was alloted accommodation with his family.
Investigating officials said Gurdeep’s wife was the women’s warden at the establishment and he used to come there after his preaching duties in Yamunanagar, Haryana. They have an eight-year-old daughter.
“The girl’s father is a bus driver and lives in Malwa region while she studies in a Chandigarh college. The incident took place a couple of months ago, after which she confided in her parents,” said a cop, privy to the investigation.
Soon after, the crime was allegedly brought to the notice of the bhawan management, who asked Gurdeep and his family to leave the premises.
“We registered a case of rape under Section 376 of the Indian Penal Code on receiving the complaint on Tuesday. The accused was arrested from Dasuya on Wednesday,” said Sector-26 station house officer (SHO) Jaspal Singh Bhullar.
Meanwhile, a bhawan official, who did not want to be named, said Gurdeep was an expert preacher and could easily develop a rapport with anyone.
