SGPC shifts 200 ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib from border villages

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has shifted over 200 ‘birs’ of Guru Granth Sahib from village gurdwaras falling along the International Border in Punjab.

SGPC additional secretary Daljit Singh Bedi said the ‘birs’ had been shifted to ensure that there was no violation of “maryada” or rituals.

He said ‘birs’ had been shifted from shrines in border village of Gurdaspur, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Ferozepur and Fazilka districts.

“We are undertaking this (shifting of ‘birs’) exercise as in some villages, gurdwara caretakers have also been asked to shift to safer areas. In their absence, there will be no one to perform the daily rituals connected with the scripture,” he added.

He said some ‘birs’ have been brought to gurdwaras in Amritsar, including Gurdwara Ramsar Sahib.
