Shivali suicide case: deputy CM orders probe; cop suspended

Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Friday has asked Gurpreet Deo inspector general of police Jalandhar to conduct a thorough inquiry in the circumstances leading to the suicide of Shivali, BA-student of Prem Chand Markanda SD College, Jalandhar.

Shivali committed suicide after being hounded by overzealous cops on a naka led by inspector Balwinder Kaur, who had allegedly humiliated the young girl in the full glare of media. She jumped before a train near Domoria railway flyover to end her life, just 30 minutes after the humiliating incident in full public view.

The IG has been asked to submit complete report within three days so that deterrent action could be taken against guilty.

Meanwhile, principal secretary (home affairs and Justice) DS Bains after receiving preliminary report of the incident has placed inspector Balwinder Kaur under suspension with immediate effect.
