Senior medical officer (SMO) Dr Rakesh Jain committed suicide in the wee hours of Tuesday by jumping before a train in Sunam, 15 km from here. Jain, 55, was posted at government hospital in Longowal, near here.

Government Railway Police SHO Gurcharan Singh said the incident happened around 3am when Dr Jain jumped before Dhauldhar Express near Mool Chand railway crossing. The victim died on the spot. The victim was reportedly under depression for some time.
Victim's son Ankush Jain said his father used to go for a walk around 3am every morning. Dr Jain had received a head injury 15 years ago when some unidentified assailants attacked him at his government accommodation in Sangrur hospital.
