It could be a few more days before the local municipal corporation is able to float tender for the proposed project of solid-waste management.
The administrative laxity to set the wheels in motion has earned the proposal yet another deadline-Thursday, October 10. The government decided it in Chandigarh on Tuesday. "Initiatives such as this take time to start off," said municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda.
The Punjab and Haryana high court, after approving the project, had given the MC six months to hire a consultant. The civic body proposes to construct the solid-waste-management plant at Bhagtanwala village, near a thriving grain market, though the environment lovers in the city have requested it constantly to consider another location.
On September 14, a few hours after Bharatiya Janata Party member of Parliament (MP) Navjot Singh Sidhu had exposed the lack of development in the city by visiting the sites where only the long-laid foundation stones stood, the MC had said it would float the tenders for the project on September 23. That deadline also was missed.
Days later, the MC gave a consultant from Delhi 10 days to float the tender (deadline which would have ended on October 3). The MP charged the government with scuttling his project. In order to resolve the deadlock, the government assured Sidhu that it would float the tender by October 7.
"Local bodies minister Anil Joshi convened the meeting where the government now gave a new date," said municipal commissioner DPS Kharbanda. "The tenders are likely to be floated by Thursday," he said.
