According to police, the main accused was annoyed with his father, Manmohan Singh, a resident of Benjamin Road, Khud Mohalla, due to his habit of excessive drinking and quarrelling in inebriated condition.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) crime, Manjit Singh Dhesi said the accused, Gurmeet Singh alias Vicky, and his friend, Sumit Dhamija, had confessed to their crime. Both of them are salesmen at a garment store.

"Gurmeet told the police that his father was an acute drinker and used to quarrel with his family under the influence of alcohol. On April 6, his father had excessive liquor and started quarreling with them," the ADCP said, adding that irked with his father's behaviour, Gurmeet hatched a conspiracy to murder him with the help of his friend, Sumit.

The body was noticed by passers-by on April 7. The Jamalpur police had registered a case of murder against unidentified accused following the complaint of the victim's wife, Manjit Kaur alias Mani, and initiated investigation.

The ADCP said Manjit was unaware that her son had killed her husband.

The police will produce the two accused in the court on Sunday.
