The Punjab and Haryana high court and lower courts in Chandigarh and the two states are giving priority to cases related to crimes against women, the acting chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court, Jasbir Singh, said on Sunday.
Inaugurating an alternative disputes' resolution centre in Sangrur, Jasbir Singh said cases related to women were now dealt with sensitivity in lower courts.
He also laid the foundation stone for the chambers of advocates at the judicial complex here. “Courts are committed to providing speedy justice to victims,” he said.
The high court chief justice also congratulated district and sessions judge MS Chauhan for ensuring trial of 100 % cases related to crimes against women in the courts under his purview.
“Last year, 1.8 lakh cases were resolved. So far this year, 33,000 such cases have been disposed of,” he said.
“Despite shortage of judges, we are focused and determined to provide speedy justice. Special directions have been issued to judges in the lower courts to solve the remaining cases at the earliest,” he said.
He said that the process to recruit new judges had already started to overcome shortage of judges. Of the 68 posts of judges in high court, 17 are vacant.
“We are planning to solve cases within two years in lower courts and one year at the high court level,” he said. He said that the purpose of an alternative disputes' resolution centers was to solve court cases with mutual consent and compromise.
