With rain lashing the city on Sunday, Government Primary School, Giaspura staff, who had been conducting two classes in open for the past two months, had a tough time.
Earlier, two classrooms of the school were declared unsafe, following which two classes were being held in open. But, on Monday, public works department submitted its report declaring another three rooms as unsafe.
As five of the total ten classrooms constructed 40 years ago have been declared unsafe now, school staff is worried about conducting classes, as they have no other space to take classes.
During a visit to the school, it was found that two classes were being conducted in open. But, around 200 students were still found sitting in the unsafe classrooms. Wide cracks have appeared on the roofs, and the condition of classrooms has become deplorable.
Teachers said five classrooms that were declared unsafe were constructed at very low level from the ground due to which rain water entered the rooms and electric current passed from the room. So, to avoid any incident, the teachers conduct classes in open during rains.
A teacher, requesting anonymity, said, "In Class 1, we have 100 students, and it is very difficult to accommodate them in one classroom. The weather is so unpredictable in Ludhiana that we don't know when it will start raining. During rains, we are left with five classrooms which are safe to sit, as these classrooms get filled with rain water. From next month we will face the main problem, as it will become difficult for students to sit in open in the scorching heat."

{{/usCountry}}Talking to Hindustan Times, elementary district education officer Gurjot Singh said, "The public works department has declared five classrooms as unsafe at government primary school-Giaspura. We have released a grant of `11 lakh to the school to construct new classrooms. I understand that it will be difficult for the teachers to conduct classes in open. So, unsafe classrooms will be demolished soon and we will start the construction of new classrooms at the earliest."
