According to Malerkotla SHO Mandhir Singh, a complaint was lodged with the police on May 17 by the girl's grandfather that Sandeep had not returned home from school. Following this, a case was registered under Sections 363 and 366-A of the CrPC. Police parties have been dispatched to Delhi and Amritsar to trace the girl.

"We are working on various theories but have got no breakthrough yet," the SHO said. Some suspects were also rounded up but nothing came out with regard to the missing girl. The SHO told HT that it had also come to light that Sandeep
had taken away her bank passbook, Aadhaar card, birth certificate and other documents with her.

The police are non-committal whether it is a case of kidnapping or elopement. The CCTV cameras installed in the school, where she went by school bus, have also not been of much help.
