Armed police and training headquarters, Shimla, would introduce new courses for the cops, apart from engaging professional trainers to instil a change in their attitude.

During a three- day workshop - 'Improving Police-Public Interface', trainers emphasised a change in the perception of cops towards general public. "It has been observed that the public is still hesitant to approach the police. There is a need to change public perception among the public,"said inspector general of police (armed police training) AP Siddique.

"Though cops are generally perceived to be good, we feel there is still lack of trust amongst the public. The training aims to fill this gap," said Siddique.

"It is usually the officers who are put under such training sessions, but it is the constables who connect with the common people," he said, adding, "Police also felt the need to make police stations more public-friendly so that people approach the cops without any fear."

More than 2,000 posts in various categories are lying vacant in the police force that has a sanctioned strengthen of nearly 17,000, due to which a number of welfare services had taken a hit.

Officers were required to prepare lists of such citizens above sixty-five years of age and were living alone. Beat officers were supposed to designate constables to visit the residences of such citizens at least once a week to enquire about their welfare and render reasonable assistance.
