State registers fall in new HIV infections

Haryana recorded overall reduction of 5.8 % in the annual new HIV infections which, an official release held, showed the impact of various interventions of Haryana State AIDS Control Society (HSACS).

Haryana recorded overall reduction of 5.8 % in the annual new HIV infections which, an official release held, showed the impact of various interventions of Haryana State AIDS Control Society (HSACS).

Addressing a training workshop, additional project director, HSACS, Dr Vijay Garg said that there were around 27,000 HIV patients in state and Haryana was among the lowest prevalence state with prevalence of 0.11% as compared to adjoining states of Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh.

The workshop, which was held on HIV/AIDS was organised for army personnel at Western Command headquarters, Chandimandir, in Panchkula near here on the occasion of World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1. About 200 army personnel participated in the workshop.

Dr Garg further said that the HIV infections have reduced from 1.54% to 0.9% in the past five years. The prevalence in high risk group population like female sex workers, males having sex with men, truckers, migrants and injecting drug users had fallen down.
