As the state government boasts about the newly built Heritage Street near Golden Temple here, stray dog menace has been giving a tough time to residents and tourists visiting the area.
A number of stray dogs can be seen roaming on the street built at a cost of Rs 160 crore, which is a visual treat to tourists and offers a perfect blend of heritage and modern architecture to the entire area near the Golden Temple.
As per the data by Civil Surgeon office, Amritsar, 12, 764 cases of dog bite were reported in Amritsar district last year. A death was also reported last year.
Recently, in two separate incidents, a five-year-boy and a four-year-old boy were mauled by stray dogs at Taran Tarn.
In spite being a world class street, visited by devotees from different parts of the world on a daily basis, the district administration has failed to curb the menace at the street.
“This street is widely popularised and there is a certain level of curiosity as the entire area has been given a facelift but one is scared by dogs here and roaming here and there, it seems the administration is not serious or they have chosen to ignore the entire problem,” said Chetan Sharma, a resident.
