Instances of stubble burning have been reported from villages in the interiors of the district, with most urban villages observing the law. Farmers are burning the stubble at night in order to escape detection.

Jagjit, a farmer in Kalar Bheni village, said though agriculture department claimed to have created awareness on the ill-effects of stubble burning, but no alterative has been provided to the farmers.

"What can we do then, department talked about happy seeders as an alternative but failed to provide . Small land owners left with no option to burn stubble as they cannot afford to buy happy seeders," he said.

Deputy commissioner Gk Singh could not be contacted, despite several attempts.

Meanwhile, cases of Asthama, chest congestion and other chest diseases have started coming to local Rajindera Medical College and Hospital.
