In a bid to officially end the controversy over bike stunts organised during a road safety awareness rally of the Chandigarh police last month, UT inspector general of police RP Upadhyaya on Thursday stressed that programmes "should be scrutinised before being held". No word, though, on action against three senior cops who were present at the rally, accepted the error and expressed regret over such a grave irony at an official function.
On leave at the time of the August 11 function, the IGP had said he was aware of the rally but not the stunt show. On August 12, the IGP, upon seeing news reports, had sought explanation from the senior police officials present during the rally. The three officers - deputy inspector general (DIG) Alok Kumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Naunihal Singh and SSP (traffic) Maneesh Chaudhry - had regretted holding the stunts. However, no action was recommended against any official.
The officers had expressly termed it an error of judgment on their part, and said that the aim was to promote how stunts should be done only while wearing full protective gear, under professional guidance.
Taking up the reply, in an interaction with HT, the IGP has asked the officers to be careful: "Any act or message which is not in sync with the Chandigarh Police policy should not be displayed."
