Suicide pact: Lovers jump before train, girl dies

An 18-year-old girl died and a 21-year-old man suffered injuries after they jumped before a running train near Phillaur, 20km from Ludhiana, following a love pact, on Thursday.

An 18-year-old girl died and a 21-year-old man suffered injuries after they jumped before a running train near Phillaur, 20km from Ludhiana, following a love pact, on Thursday.

The man had a narrow escape as the train driver applied emergency brakes.

The victims have been identified as Haibowal resident Preeti, who was a Class-10 student and Sunny Kumar, a resident of the same locality.

Witnesses said, “The young couple jumped before the running train holding their hands between Ludhiana and Phillaur on Thursday afternoon. Though train driver applied emergency brakes, but to no avail.”

Both of them suffered injuries and were rushed to the Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, where the girl succumbed to injuries and Sunny’s condition is stated to be stable.

Government railway Police (GRP) station house officer (SHO) Inderjit Singh said, “The couple jumped before Tata-Muri Express near Phillaur around 1.45pm. The train driver said that the couple was wondering around railway tracks. He had blown horn to alert them, but instead of moving away, they jumped before the train, he added. The driver added that if he would not have applied brakes, both of them could have been crushed to death.”

Meanwhile, the railway police have filed proceedings under Section 174 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
