Ridiculing the statement of deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal that he had nothing to do with the Operation Bluestar memorial in Harmander Sahib complex in Amritsar, Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh said on Thursday that he (Sukhbir) was lying and trying to escape the responsibility on the issue.

He said if that be the case, both Sukhbir and his father should explain their position on the memorial and Balwant Singh Rajoana, who has been declared a 'Zinda Shaheed'.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Capt said it was typical of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal to "run with the hare and hunt with the hounds".

Badal's double standards were exposed as he had given approval to set up the memorial on the one hand while he was maintaining silence on the other hand while his son was trying to run away from the issue, the Congress leader claimed.

"Who does not know that the SGPC and Akal Takht are controlled by the Badals?" Capt remarked, while asking, "Is it possible that SGPC president Avtar Makkar will do anything without their (the Badals') knowledge."

Capt Singh asked the BJP why it had maintained a silence on the issue or whether the party had submitted to the Akali agenda. "I am surprised as to why the BJP is silent on the issue," the former chief minister remarked.
