'Sikh Youth of Punjab' (SYP), the youth wing of the hardliner group Dal Khalsa , on Monday suggested that the criminal law should be amended to award life imprisonment without parole to rapists.

Talking to media persons party head Ranbir Singh informed that his party has sent suggestions to justice JS Verma Commission, which has been set up to study stringent laws for preventing crimes against women, after the gang-rape of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi in December last year.

He said, "The law must be amended in such a way that the rape accused should be subjected to life imprisonment till death. While those involved in the brutal rape cases must be put in condemned cells till death."

Pertinently, the gang rape of the 23-year-old woman on December 16 has evoked strong reactions from all quarters of society with many asking for capital punishment for the accused.

He said, " Death sentence is not a deterrent for any crime. Most of the countries have abolished it, so India should also follow the suit. However, he said, some strict conditions have to be imposed in life sentence itself: parole and commutation of the sentence should not be granted to the accused sentenced to life imprisonment".

He also suggested that vulgarity in songs and movies that instigates and provokes violence and sexual abuse against women, must be checked and curtailed.
