With many gangsters on the loose in Punjab, the state police have come up with a ‘one cop against one gangster’ strategy to nail the criminals who are giving sleepless nights to the department by striking at will.
Additional director general of police, law and order, Rohit Choudhary, said nodal officers have been appointed for the task. “We have released a list of 35 gangsters. To keep track of their activities, 35 nodal officers have been deputed. Each officer will keep track of one gangster,” said Choudhary. Each nodal officer will report to a team headed by a senior officer. Of 35 gangsters, 21 are proclaimed offenders.
“The idea is to keep watch on them. We will give them chance to improve, give up all anti-social activities and return to the mainstream,” he added.
The ADGP, however, made it clear that no leniency will be shown towards ‘A’ category gangsters. “They will be put behind bars,” he added.
The ADGP also met families of some criminals in Faridkot. Some families also accused police of falsely implicating their children in criminal cases. The ADGP said he will look into the issue.

During an interactive session with students at the Baba Farid Law College in Faridkot, the ADGP came under a barrage of queries on why police have failed to take any action against cops responsible for Behbal Kalan firing.
Two Sikhs youths were killed in police firing at Behbal Kalan while they were protesting the desecration of Guru Granth Sahib in October 2015.
