Following a complaint by sub-divisional magistrate (SDM) Anupreet Kaur, the Tarn Taran Police on Thursday booked and arrested her husband for allegedly demanding dowry and attempting to strangulate her on Wednesday.

Police have registered a case against Bachitar Singh, Anupreet’s husband, under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) and 382 (theft after preparation made for causing death, hurt or restraint in order to the committing of the theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Tarn Taran city police station.

Confirming this, station house officer (SHO) of the Tarn Taran city police station sub-inspector Sukhbir Singh said, “In her complaint to police, Tarn Taran SDM stated that she got married to Bachitar Singh eight months back. She alleged that her husband pressurised her for dowry and even thrashed her. Once she brought Rs 5 lakh from her parent’s and gave to her husband. But on Wednesday, her husband again demanded Rs 5 lakh, but she refused and was beaten up, and also effort was made to ‘strangulate’ her. When she raised an alarm, her husband ran away with her gold chain.”

SHO Sukhbir Singh said, “When we arrested Bachitar Singh, 260 grams heroin was seized from his posession. We have registered a case under the NDPS Act and will start a probe into from where he procured the drug.”
