Karamjit Singh of Dhurkot Ransihan village and Ranjodh Singh of Jawahar Singh Wala village of Moga district are the suspects. On September 7, the police had registered a criminal case against a woman, Gaganjeet Kaur; her father, Karamjeet Singh; brother, Manpreet Singh; and an unidentified person under Sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 365 (kidnapping with intent to confine), and 120 (concealing criminal design) of the Indian Panel Code (IPC) at Mehna in this regard.

Kamaljeet Kaur, wife of the victim, had stated in a complaint to the senior superintendent of police that some passengers had hired the taxi of her husband, Sukhwinder Singh, to go to New Delhi on July 27, but he had failed to return. She had blamed his disappearance on her close relatives living at Bedi Nagar in Moga.

The investigators tracked the telephone calls of Sukhi and found Karamjit Singh and Ranjodh Singh had called him up many times before the disappearance. "After the investigation, we rounded-up Karamjit and Ranjodh," said Gopal Chand, station house officer of Ajitwal. "During interrogation, they disclosed that they had hired Sukhi's taxi on July 27 to go to New Delhi, and at Patran, murdered him in the cab itself. They threw his body into a river."

Karamjit Singh and Ranjodh Singh now are charged with murder under Section 302 of the IPC.
