The body of subedar Dharmesh Sangwan (34), one of the two Indian soldiers killed in an attack on a United Nations compound in South Sudan, was cremated at his native village, Kheri Battar, in Bhiwani district with the full state honours on Monday.
The slain soldier was given a tearful adieu by his family, relatives and hundreds of people from his village, neighbouring village and politicians, including Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda, Bhiwani MP Shruti Chaudhry and state minister Satpal Sangwan.
The martyr's elder son lit the pyre after armymen unwrapped the body from the national flag.
Dharmesh was lovably known as Gulia in the village and had won several medals in rowing for the country.
A proud Rajender Sangwan, father of Dharmesh, said he was proud to have born such a son and would send his grandson to the Indian Army. Taking note of the achievements of Dharmesh, the state government had also declared his native village a model village some time ago.
Talking to mediapersons, Rohtak MP Deepender Singh Hooda and Bhiwani MP Shruti Chaudhry said they would try to get maximum possible help to the family of the slain soldier after discussing the matter with chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.
