Today’s youth, irrespective of their country, were drifting away from mathematics and science and teachers were to be blamed for it, observed M Shamsher Ali, president, Educational Quality Assurance Foundation (EQAF), while delivering a lecture at Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) on Monday.
“There is a constant fall in the quality of teaching and teachers are not making education interesting for students, he said, while telling teachers how to make science and mathematics more understandable and interesting for the students.
Ali, founder vice-chancellor, Southeast University (2002-2010), and Bangladesh Open University (1992-1996), in his lecture observed: “Science can be a fun if something taught in the class can easily be applied in the daily life.” says Ali, who has been the director of Atomic Energy Centre, Dhaka (1970-78).
He also showed worry on the state of the teachers of the rural areas, which was affecting the future of students in these areas. The major problem in rural areas was the vacant post of teachers and lack of science teaching facilities and equipment, he added, while pointing out that teachers were not updating their knowledge on the two subjects.
“There is a need to bridge the gap and make a strong connect between the student, class study and the real world. The teacher should know how to make subjects interesting by giving real life examples. When a student steps out of the classroom he shouldn't feel that the knowledge imparted in class cannot be applied in the real world.” Ali added.

{{/usCountry}}In his lecture, he highlighted how interest in mathematics can be created primarily through creating interest in geometry. He quoted examples that were in dialogue form where a mother can teach geometry to her son through a glass of water.
“Never make study dry for the students, make it delightful,” he advised, while calling upon science teachers to take students closer to the real world of nature.
