Unidentified thieves made an unsuccessful attempt to break open an automatic teller machine (ATM) of State Bank of Patiala in Dhariwal, 11km from here, on Sunday night.

Accoding to SBP branch manager SK Malhotra, the ATM contained Rs 60 lakh, which is about 250 yards from a police station on the GT Road.

When security guard Lakhwinder Singh arrived at the ATM at around 9am on Monday morning, he found the locks of the shutter broken open. He reported the matter to the bank authorities, who called the police.

Gurdaspur DSP (Rural I) Gurmej Singh,Gurdaspur CIA staff incharge Ashok Kumar, Dhariwal SHO Tarsem Masih and bank authorities rushed to the spot.

The Dhariwal SHO said that it seemed that the thieves tried to cut open the ATM by using a gas cutter but could do so only partially and thus failed to lay their hands on the cash.

He said that they might have left the spot out of fear of getting caught or the cutter they were carrying might have run out of gas.
