Thieves took away an automated teller machine (ATM) of the State Bank of India (SBI) in Jaitu town of the district on Saturday. However, it could not be ascertained that how much cash was there in the ATM, because the bank officials failed to calculate it due to a technical fault in the network. The ATM, installed near the Kotkapura Chowk in Jaitu, did not have any guard.
“The private company, which loads cash in ATMs, has a problem with its network in Chennai, so nothing could be said exactly about the cash,” the bank officials said.
The incident took place in the wee hours of Saturday. ”The unidentified persons first broke open the glass door of the ATM, smeared the CCTV cameras with black colour and decamped with the ATM. They also took away the recording system of the CCTV device along with them and disconnected the power connection,” claimed a source.
”We have registered a case about the theft of the ATM against unidentified persons, but nothing is known about the amount as the bank is yet to calculate it. We have started investigation,” said Jasbir Singh Pannu, station house officer, Jaitu.
It is the second incident of theft of ATM in the district. An ATM of the Punjab National Bank, which had a cash of `2.8 lakh in it, was uprooted by thieves in Faridkot on June 7.
