Three arrested in Patiala for cow smuggling

The police arrested three persons in connection with illegal smuggling of bovines and impounded their truck carrying 14 cows near Railway Crossing No 21 in Patiala on Sunday.

The police arrested three persons in connection with illegal smuggling of bovines and impounded their truck carrying 14 cows near Railway Crossing No 21 in Patiala on Sunday.

The accused have been identified as Ajeez, a native of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh; Meharban and Anish, both natives natives of Muzaffarnagar in UP.

The police said following a tip-off by local Shiv Sena members, the police set up a naka and intercepted the truck.

Upon inspection, the police found 14 cows trapped in the truck and arrested their truck driver and two other persons accompanying him.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the cows were brought from the cow market in Patiala and the accused intended to sell the cows to slaughterhouses in other states.

The police have registered a case under Section 307 (attempt to murder), 279 (rash driving), 295A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) of the Indian Penal Code and also imposed Sections 4A,4B/8 of the Cow Slaughter Act.
