A 55-year-old woman and her two children died after the roof of their house collapsed in Amritsar in the wee hours of Friday.
Victims Sukhjit Kaur, her daughter Jaspreet Kaur, 20, and son Jugraj Singh, 18, were sleeping on the ground floor of their double-storeyed house in Katra Safaid Gali Nand Lal Wali when the roof collapsed around 4.30am. Sukhjit’s husband, Amarjit Singh, a Punjab State Power Corporation Limited employee, was on duty at the time of the incident.
The noise of the collapse woke up the neighbours, who rushed to rescue the victims. The fire brigade and municipal town planner (MTP) department officials also reached the spot, and pulled out the victims from the rubble after putting in efforts for an hour and a half. The victims were taken to the civil hospital, where the doctors declared them “brought dead”.
The family had bought the house, an old construction like most buildings in this oldest part of the city, five years ago.
