To promote vegetation cultivation, the state agriculture department has started distributing the seeds of vegetables and pulses among women free of cost. On Saturday, the department distributed more than 100 bags of seeds and saplings of vegetables among women at Dala village in the district.

Harpreet Singh chief agriculture officer, who is also incharge of the Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA), said that to attract women, the department would distribute vegetable and pulses saplings and seeds free of cost to the women farmers in different villages.

Sarpanch Harbans Singh Johal of Dhalleke village said nowadays rural women were showing interest in growing vegetables. "It will bring more income to the middle class farmers whose profits are diminishing day by day," he said.

Baldev Kaur of Sangatpura village said that she has been growing cauliflower, ladyfingers, mushrooms, carrots and tomatoes in her kitchen garden for the last two years. "During the last two years, I never bought vegetables from the market. Now, I have sowed radish and spanich in my kitchen garden," she said.

Chief agriculture officer Harpreet Singh said that farmers were sowing vegetables on 23,743 acres in four sub-divisions - Moga, Baghapurana, Dharamkot and Nihal Singh Wala. "Besides, 62 acres of land is under tomato cultivation. It will increase in the next three months," he said.
