On Friday, many organisations of her hometown queued up to honour her. She has outstanding performance in many One-Day Internationals but it was only after people read in newspapers of her latest achievement that they thronged her house to congratulate her parents.

After that at Guru Nanak College here, many prominent people and sports organisations honoured Harmanpreet Kaur, her father, Harmander Singh Bhullar, and mother, Satwinder Kaur. In June 2012, Harmanpreet was appointed vice-captain of the Indian team.

State Congress secretary Harjot Kamal secretary was one of the people who honoured the cricketer. “She is the pride of not only Moga district but also the entire country,” he said. “I hope that under her leadership, we win the next cricket series.”

“Only when I took congratulations over telephone did I come to know that she had been made skipper,” said Satwinder Kaur. “When my daughter scored an unbeaten 107 in 109 deliveries against England in the latest World Cup in Mumbai, I knew captaincy was a matter of time. It has come sooner than I expected.”
