The unruly auto-rickshaw menace is yet another issue which has added to the city residents' woes. Most of the auto-rickshaws are ferrying passengers illegally without valid documents on the roads. Besides, reckless driving and abrupt stoppages by them in the middle of the roads cause accidents.

There are several busy points in the city where huge traffic snarls are witnessed on regular basis. These areas include Bharat Nagar chowk, Jalandhar bypass, old city, Gill Road, Aarti chowk, bus stand and Dholewal chowk among others.

The illegal practice is flourishing right under the nose of the traffic cops and transport authorities.

The auto-rickshaw drivers stop their vehicle anywhere, creating chaos on the roads. In a bid to get passengers, they even take a halt in the middle of the roads, resulting in traffic jams and also mishaps sometimes.

Besides, most of the auto-rickshaws carry passengers more than their capabilities. It poses threat to the lives of not only passengers but other commuters on the roads.

As per transport norms, auto-rickshaws are permitted to carry passengers inside the municipal corporation limits- the four octroi posts on the periphery of the city; Barewal Awana, Dhandari, Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College, Gill Road and Hotel Amaltas on Jalandhar Road.
