Treat all garbage from Chandigarh, or face action: NGT to Jaypee
HT Chandigarh had in its report on May 22 highlighted how the waste management system in the city had reached a breaking point, as the plant had processed only 700 of the 3,400 tonnes of garbage received in 50 days.
The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Wednesday directed the solid-waste processing plant run by Jaypee Group in Chandigarh to accept all garbage of the city as per the agreement with the municipal corporation.

A May 22 report of the commissioner appointed by the NGT had underlined how the civic body is sending 470 tonnes of garbage every day to the plant, but only 30% is being processed while the rest is being thrown in the adjoining dumping ground in Dadumajra.
At the hearing on Wednesday, NGT chairman Justice Swatanter Kumar said both the MC and the plant authorities have to submit a status report on the next date of hearing, May 31.
HT Chandigarh had in its report on May 22 highlighted how the waste management system in the city had reached a breaking point, as the plant had processed only 700 of the 3,400 tonnes of garbage received in 50 days.
Worse, the city generates about 450 tonnes of garbage daily but the MC fails to lift it all.
The NGT had appointed the commissioner on April 27, while hearing a case filed by the plant authorities for their demand of tipping fee (processing fee).
Later, Jaypee Group, whose contract of running the plant ended on March 31, took a u-turn saying it’s ready to run the plant without charging the fee.
