Tricycles, sewing machines distributed

Rural development and panchayat minister Surjit Singh Rakhra presided over the district-level Republic Day function here by unfurling the national flag at Mata Gujri College and taking salute from contingents of Punjab Police, NCC cadets and students. Fatehgarh Sahib DC Yashvir Mahajan and SSP HS Mann were also present.

Hundreds of students from a number of schools and colleges regaled the spectators with the cultural performances.

The minister handed over seven tri-cycles to the physically challenged persons and sewing machines to 20 needy women on behalf of the district Red Cross society. Rakhra also honoured five freedom fighters-Gurmej Singh, Sant Singh Patnga, Bant Singh, Gurdial Singh, Banta Singh and families of 17 martyr cops. After the function, sweets were distributed among the students.

Addressing the gathering, Rakhra exhorted the people to rededicate themselves to the ideals of nationalism and patriotism and work with commitment, dedication, faith and conviction to make Punjab and India strong and vibrant. He reminded the youth of the unparalleled contribution of Punjab in the freedom struggle. He said that Punjab's role in post Independence era was also exemplary, especially in making the country self reliant in food production.
