Prof MPS Ishar, vice-chancellor of Jammu University, inaugurated the seminar, while Jaspal Singh, vice-chancellor of Punjabi University, presided over it.

Prof Ishar in his address “Trysts with anti-cancer drug and drug designing” dealt with various aspects of the dreaded disease and locating efficient, comprehensive and cost-effective drugs to heal it.

In his lecture, he emphasised upon computer-aided drug designing techniques and called upon young scholars to explore newer areas of chemistry, which was diversifying into new horizons.

Jaspal Singh said chemistry was closely related to life and was at the heart of many other sciences. In a lighter vein, he said while the science of chemistry was expanding in collaboration with other sciences and exploring new frontiers, “the chemistry of relationships was getting disturbed as never before”.

He urged chemistry teachers and scholars to work in collaboration with NGOs and schools to bring the benefits of the science closer to people. “Enhancement of value-based scientific temper and its utilitarian applications was the need of the hour,” he said.

Balbir Kaur, head of the department, welcomed the delegates and dignitaries while highlighting the achievements of the department.

Prof Raman Kumar Verma, in his presentation, talked about newer vistas of chemistry in which the scientists had been working recently.

Jaspal Singh honoured Prof Ishar with a memento and released a publication of the department.
