Two debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in Bathinda district in separate cases in the past 48 hours. Both took the extreme step due to agricultural losses.

Two debt-ridden farmers committed suicide in Bathinda district in separate cases in the past 48 hours. Both took the extreme step due to agricultural losses.

Jagmeet Singh (27) of Chack Fateh Singh Wala village hanged himself from a fan hook in his house on Wednesday. He has left behind a debt of Rs 7 lakh. Jagmeet's father Khem Singh has been bed-ridden for the past two years after fracturing his leg in an accident. Jagmeet had borrowed the money to pay for his father's treatment. The family also has to repay loan to a bank, taken for agricultural purposes. Jagmeet had also borrowed money from a commission agent.

In another incident, farmer union leader Tehal Singh (45) committed suicide at his house in Phull town of Rampura Phul. He hanged himself from a fan. Tehal left behind a suicide note in which he said he took the extreme step due to debt. He had spent five months in jail over the demand for compensation for farmer suicide victims' families.
