Two natives of the district succumbed to swine flu at hospitals in Ludhiana and Chandigarh earlier this week. The state's death toll due to the disease now stands at 49. Two more residents of the district are getting treatment for swine flu at the PGIMER, Chandigarh.
The victims have been identified as Baljeet Kaur (31), a resident of Brass village, and Dinesh Gupta (58), resident of Mandi Gobindgarh.
Baljeet was tested positive for the disease last week and died during treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
The other victim, Gupta, was admitted to the Dayanand Medical Collage and Hospital, Ludhiana, on Wednesday and succumbed to the disease the same day. The Fatehgarh Sahib health department is awaiting the death report.
Civil Surgeon Gurdit Singh Sodhi said, "The sudden change in weather and decreased temperature has again led to increased risk of the disease. People are requested to take the symptoms seriously and be cautious."
Sodhi added he had requested the Ludhiana civil surgeon to examine family members and friends of Gupta for the symptoms of the disease. "I have sent a medical team to Baljeet's house to examine her family. Medicines have been given to 16 members of her family," he added.
As on date, a total of 561 suspected cases of swine flu have been detected in the state. Of these, 227 have tested positive and 259 patients had been graded as category-B of the disease, a milder form of the influenza.
