In a breakthrough, the state special operations cell (SSOC) in a joint operation with Jalandhar counter-intelligence staff claimed to have recovered 6-kg heroin worth Rs 30 crore in the international market.
Addressing mediapersons at a press conference, counter-intelligence assistant inspector general of police Amarjit Singh Bajwa said that the joint team intercepted a white-coloured Tata Indica car near the Sultanwind Canal, and arrested Gurdev Singh of Valtoha area in Tarn Taran district, and Tarsem Singh of Tarn Taran."
"The team recovered 6-kg heroin from the accused and registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, at the SSOC police station in Amritsar," he added.
Preliminary questioning revealed that the accused were in touch with a Pakistan-based smuggler, code-named 'Bhatti', who had used people crossing the Indo-Pak border to deliver the consignment to Gurdev. Gurdev deputed Tarsem to collect the consignment. The two were on the way to move it further, when they were intercepted.
The AIG said that the arrested persons would be produced in court, where police remand would be sought for further questioning.
