The suspect has been identified as Ajaib Singh, a resident of Chujanka village in Barnala district. The police have booked Ajaib for murder and destroying evidence on the complaint of Sher Singh, victim's uncle and suspect's brother-in-law.

Deputy superintendent of police Harmeek Singh said as per the FIR, the victim, Gurpreet Kaur, was living with Sher Singh's sister Shinder Kaur, wife of Ajaib Singh, at Nangal village.

The incident happened on March 17, when Shinder came to her brother Sher Singh's place, leaving behind Gurpreet to look after the house. The police said Ajaib got furious seeing Gurpreet playing with her friends in the street. As per the complaint, the Ajaib took her to one of the rooms and thrashed her brutally, following which she died.

Unsuspecting Gurpreet's family members cremated her the same day.

The DSP said Sher Singh couldn't buy what Ajaib was saying, after the former visited the 'accident' spot and informed the police. “The suspect has confessed to having thrashed the firl leading to her death,” the DSP said.
