The constable was taking Lakhwinder Singh alias Lakha to Bakhsikhana (lockup at court complex) after producing him before the court on Monday.

Lakha was booked for drug peddling by Koom Kalan police in 2010, and has been lodged in Ludhiana central jail since.

He was brought to districts courts for hearing of a case.

Dharampal, station house officer (SHO) at Division Number 5 police station, said during the hearing, the court ordered free legal aid to another undertrial, who was produced along with Lakha.

Following directions of the court, a constable was taking both of them to the free legal aid clinic, before taking them to the lockup.

Meanwhile, Lakha pushed the cop and fled the spot.

The police post at court complex was informed, following which check points were established at several places in the city and raids were initiated at his possible locus in the city.

Earlier, on July 2, undertrial Kulwant Singh, accused of drug peddling, escaped from police custody in the court complex.
