Local Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Congress leaders supported them on grounds that no written order has so far been received from Supreme Court, officials of the two parties said.

The local leaders also assured farmers that no action would be taken against them.

However, at most places in Punjab, farmers stopped filling up the canal following the Supreme Court’s orders, official sources said.
