To promote installation of rooftop solar power plants in the city, the UT administration has come up with a draft policy for making amendments in building bylaws. The by-laws are expected to be notified by next weekend.
Following the notification of the policy, residents will not have to take approval from the municipal corporation or the estate office for installation of solar power plants.
The draft policy makes it mandatory to install solar power plants on new buildings as well old buildings. The existing buildings will be given a given two years time from the date of issuance of notification, for installing the solar plants. Earlier, the UT administration had made the installation of solar power plants mandatory only for residential, commercial and other building covering an area of more than 500 square yards.
The support structure on which rooftop solar panels are installed shall be a temporary structure.
The new draft policy has been framed following the recommendations of the department of science and technology. The department had also given a detailed presentation to the UT Adviser Parimal Rai to promote Chandigarh as a solar city.
