A group of 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims led by the Danga Peedit Welfare Society, Punjab, staged a protest outside the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) office and blocked the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road for more than one hour on Monday.
The protest resulted in traffic jam, thereby causing inconvenience to commuters.
The riot-affected persons led by Sikh Danga Peedit welfare society president Surjit Singh protested against the notices issued by the GLADA chief administrator to vacate the flats which were allotted to riot-affected people at Urban Estate, Dugri, Ludhiana.
The members of the society also submitted a memorandum to the GLADA additional chief administrator regarding their demands.
While talking to mediapersons, president of the Danga Peedit Welfare Society Surjit Singh said, “The Punjab government has allotted flats to riot-affected people and their families have been residing in flats for more than 20 years, but now GLADA is asking us to vacate them.”
The delegation of riot-affected people would meet chief minister Parkash Singh Badal regarding their demands next week, he added.
While talking to HT, GLADA additional chief administrator Baldev Singh said, “We have issued notices for vacating flats following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana high court.”
The court had given the above orders as some of the flats were illegally occupied by people who were not riot affected and were using them for commercial gains.
