Variation in vegetable prices in retail and wholesale markets has raised eyebrows. While the price of different vegetables in the retail market is skyrocketing, the price of the same has dipped in the wholesale market.
While the wholesalers say that there is a dip in vegetable prices, retailers have been presenting a different view. City residents, after seeing the retail market prices, are forced to believe that price of vegetables has increased due to rain and stormy weather in many parts of the country.
There is an increase of even 50 per cent of the cost of some of the vegetables during the last one week. The cost of the same vegetables in the wholesale market was near static for the past sometime. The price of ladyfinger in the retail market has doubled in recent past and reached Rs 80/kg, the price of the same in the wholesale market was only Rs 18/kg. The price of peas in the retail market has reached Rs 40/ kg, while price of the same in the wholesale market was Rs 25/ kg. Interestingly, bitter guard prices have reached Rs 80/kg in retail market, which was selling at Rs 24 in the wholesale market.

The price of cauliflower in the retail market in Ludhiana is Rs 30/kg and the same in the wholesale market is Rs 10/kg. The price of tomato in the retail market was Rs 45 and the same in wholesale market was Rs 30. Essential commodity, onion has also reached Rs 25 in the retail market, whereas it was Rs 13 in the wholesale market.

Mohammad Gulam Sarvar, a vegetable retailer, said there had been a steep rise in the price of vegetables due to which it was increased in the retail market. “The sudden hike has been witnessed due to the inappropriate ratio of demand and supply,” said Sarvar. Meanwhile, general secretary of the Fruits and Vegetables Commission Agents Association of Punjab Amarveer Singh said it was a mischief of the retailers that the prices of vegetables increased drastically. They increased it on the pretext of rain and storm in other parts of the country.
