The annual convocation of Dr Shyam Lal Thapar College of Nursing took place on Friday at Rajiv Gandhi Auditorium where SS Gill, vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, gave convocational address and awarded degrees to the students. Raj Kumar Verka, vice-chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes, was the guest of honour.
Verka, in his address, advised the students that they must take maximum benefit of scholarships for SC, BC and minority communities. He expressed concern over the large backlog in the payment of scholarships to SC students. He criticised the Punjab government for its "indifferent" attitude towards ensuring the timely payment of post-matric scholarship of students, which was released by the Centre.
Verka questioned the Punjab government that why it could not avail of the benefits from Babu Jagjiwan Ram Chhatrawas Yojana for free hostel facilities to SC students. "Whereas all other states have availed of thousands of crores of central government grants to provide free hostel facilities to SC students," he added.
SS Gill congratulated the students for entering their career after putting in hard labour during studies. He advised the students that while entering the career they must try to leave their footprint to show a new way to others. "Hard work has no substitute, especially in the nursing profession. They should not neglect the work and personal attention for any reason and their commitment will give them more satisfaction," he said.
He called upon the nursing students that they should also try to enter the administrative career through civil services as doctors and engineers are doing. Gill also advised the young post graduates and graduates not to compromise on the values of life.

Principal Usha Sharma read out the college report. In the convocation, 10 students got MSc degrees, while 100 students were awarded BSc and PB BSc nursing degrees.
